3 modes
Three ways to play the random emoji generator
Choose One emoji, Emoji story or Charades in the options beside the wheel. The mode changes what the result asks of you. Every emoji on the wheel keeps the same chance.
One emoji
The popup shows the emoji large with its official name, group and version, such as “smiling face with sunglasses · Smileys & Emotion · Emoji 1.0”.
Emoji story
Spins 3, 4 or 5 emoji in a row with quiet spins and no repeats, then hands you a story prompt to tell or write.
Charades
Every result becomes an acting challenge: “Charades: act out “unicorn” with no talking until someone guesses it.”

Emoji story
How an emoji story prompt works
Emoji story mode on the random emoji generator spins 3, 4 or 5 emoji in a row, with no repeats, and turns them into a story prompt. The spins run quietly, so no popup interrupts the row, and each emoji fills its box as the wheel stops.
Choose Emoji story, pick how many emoji you want, then press Spin a story. With Quick spins on, each spin takes 1 second. Every picked emoji is hidden until the story ends, which is why one story never shows the same emoji twice.
When the row is full, the names appear under it with one of the 5 rules. Copy story prompt copies the rule and the emoji for a group chat or a class slide, and each finished story is logged in the Results tab with its time.
A story needs at least as many emoji on the wheel as it has boxes. Elimination mode must be off in Customize, or the story won't start.
rocket → pizza → unicorn
Tell a story in exactly 3 sentences that uses every emoji.
Example story: A rocket landed in the school field at lunchtime. Out climbed a pilot holding a giant pizza. A unicorn trotted over and ate the last slice.

Quick start
How to spin a random emoji
The wheel starts with a mix of 40, such as 😂 😍 😎 🤯 👻, so every slice is big enough to see.
Pick the groups
Keep the starter mix, or press a group such as Food & Drink to add all of it. Press it again to take it off.
Add single emoji
Pick emoji one by one opens a grid you can search by name, such as “cat”. Highlighted emoji are on the wheel.
Show names if you like
Tick Show names on the wheel to print each name next to its emoji, such as “🍕 pizza”.
Spin
Click the wheel or the Spin button, or tap Space. The emoji pops up large with its name, group and version.
With more than 150 slices, the wheel hides the labels and shows the emoji at the pointer under the wheel instead. Your browser's crypto.getRandomValues picks each emoji and each story rule, and the randomness checker can test any list with 10,000 spins.
9 Unicode groups
The nine emoji groups on the emoji wheel
The random emoji generator sorts its 305 emoji into the 9 groups the Unicode Standard uses, in the official list's order. Unicode has a 10th group, Component, for skin tones and hair styles that don't stand alone, so the wheel leaves it out.
| Group | Emoji | In the starter | First four |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smileys & Emotion | 50 | 5 | 😀 grinning face, 😄 grinning face with smiling eyes, 😁 beaming face with smiling eyes, 😅 grinning face with sweat |
| People & Body | 35 | 5 | 👋 waving hand, 👌 OK hand, ✌️ victory hand, 🤞 crossed fingers |
| Animals & Nature | 45 | 5 | 🐶 dog face, 🐱 cat face, 🐰 rabbit face, 🦊 fox |
| Food & Drink | 40 | 5 | 🍎 red apple, 🍌 banana, 🍉 watermelon, 🍇 grapes |
| Travel & Places | 35 | 5 | 🌍 globe showing Europe-Africa, 🌋 volcano, 🏕️ camping, 🏖️ beach with umbrella |
| Activities | 30 | 5 | 🎃 jack-o-lantern, 🎄 Christmas tree, 🎆 fireworks, 🎈 balloon |
| Objects | 35 | 5 | 👓 glasses, 🕶️ sunglasses, 🎒 backpack, 👑 crown |
| Symbols | 21 | 5 | ♻️ recycling symbol, ✅ check mark button, ❌ cross mark, ❓ red question mark |
| Flags | 14 | 0 | 🏁 chequered flag, 🚩 triangular flag, 🏳️ white flag, 🏴 black flag |
| Total | 305 | 40 | All groups |
Three placements that are easy to miss
- The fire emoji 🔥 sits in Travel & Places, with the weather symbols, not with Symbols.
- The red heart ❤️ sits in Smileys & Emotion, next to the faces.
- The birthday cake 🎂 sits in Food & Drink, not in Activities with the balloons.
The names and groups match the Unicode emoji list for Emoji 18.0, checked on October 21, 2026. That release has 3,963 fully-qualified emoji when each skin tone counts separately. The wheel uses one form of each, with no skin tones.
Emoji versions
How old the emoji on the emoji generator are
Most are among the oldest emoji there are: 232 of the 305 date from Emoji 1.0 or earlier. The version shows in every One emoji result, so players can see how long an emoji has been around.
The newest on the wheel come from Emoji 13.0: 🧋 bubble tea and 🪄 magic wand. Older phones and computers may draw newer emoji as a box or a blank, which matters most in charades.
The wheel sticks to well-known emoji on purpose. Each one should be easy to name, draw or act out, whoever is holding the phone.

Emoji charades
How to play emoji charades
Choose Charades, let one player spin the random emoji generator, and have them act out the emoji with no talking. The popup tells the actor what to act, such as “act out ‘unicorn’”, and the rest of the room guesses.
Keep it secret
The actor spins on their own phone and hides the screen, or a host reads the result and whispers it.
Add a time limit
Pick a 30, 60 or 90-second countdown. The clock starts as soon as you close the popup, and a chime marks zero.
Pick easy groups
Animals & Nature (45), Food & Drink (40) and Activities (30) act out more easily than Symbols or Flags.
No repeats
Have Customize remove each winner automatically, so the same emoji never comes back in one game.
For bigger party rounds with questions and challenges, the truth or dare wheel brings its own question bank. The random animal generator runs drawing and acting rounds with animals only.
More emoji games
More games with random emojis
One emoji mode is a blank canvas for games of your own. These need nothing but the wheel and a group.
Emoji sketch
Spin one emoji, start the Timer for 60 seconds, and everyone draws it in their own style. Compare drawings at zero.
Name that emoji
Read the official name aloud, such as “face with tears of joy”, and see who can point to the right slice first.
Story chain
Spin a 5-emoji story with the one-sentence rule, and each player adds a sentence for the next emoji.
Mood check-in
In class or at a team meeting, spin once each and share a time you felt like the emoji.
For a story that needs a first letter as well, spin the letter wheel too. For word-based drawing and guessing games, the random word generator supplies nouns, verbs and adjectives.
Devices
Why the same emoji looks different on each device
Each system, such as iOS, Android and Windows, draws its own emoji pictures, so the same emoji looks different on each device. The name and meaning stay the same.
Seeing a box or two letters?
Your device has no picture for that emoji, so it shows a fallback. Newer emoji can show as boxes on older systems, and on Windows many browsers show country flags, such as 🇯🇵, as 2 letters. The popup always shows the official name, so everyone knows which emoji came up.
The wheel's 14 flags include 8 country flags. For real country flags with region filters, use the random country generator.
FAQ
Random emoji generator FAQ

The wheel can hold all 305 emoji in its list. It starts with a mix of 40, and the All 305 emoji button adds the rest.

Yes. Paste any emoji as its own line in the entries list. Emoji outside the list spin normally but show no name in the popup.

They are the CLDR short names that the Unicode Consortium publishes for each emoji. The popup and the emoji grid both show them, so a player can check what an emoji is meant to be.
