A times tables wheel spins one multiplication fact at a time, such as 7 × 8, from the tables you choose. Answer it, keep score, and the facts you miss come back for extra practice.

Quick start

How to practice with the times tables wheel

Chance decides the order, which stops students reciting a table from memory of its sequence. The quiz panel starts on the 2, 5 and 10 tables, so teachers, tutors, parents and students can press Next question straight away.

  1. Choose the tables

    Press any table from 1 to 12, or a quick set: All 12; 2, 5 and 10; or 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12.

  2. Set the range

Multiply by 1 to 10 or 1 to 12, and pick a time per question if you want one.

  3. Get a question

Press Next question. The wheel spins for 1 second and the fact appears in the panel.

  4. Answer and mark

Type the answer and press Check, or press Show answer and mark it right or wrong.

The score and the missed facts update after every answer, and both stay in this browser after a reload.

How big

How many facts each choice puts on the wheel

The wheel holds every fact for the tables you pick, from 1 × 1 up to 12 × 12, with one slice per fact. Pressing a table adds or removes it, and the wheel rebuilds at once. Undo in the Entries box brings back the last wheel.

  • 59Different answers12 and 24 each turn up 6 times

Each fact is written table first: the 7s run 7 × 1, 7 × 2 and on to 7 × 12. To mix in reversed facts, such as 3 × 7, add the 3s too. You can also type your own facts in the Entries box, one per line, such as 13 × 4.

Learning order

Why the times tables shrink as you learn them

The full grid looks like 144 facts, but turnarounds such as 4 × 9 and 9 × 4 share an answer, so there are really 78 to learn. Every table you master removes a whole row and column.

Knock out the 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s, and only 36 facts are left. Add the 11s, then the 3s and 4s, and the last 15 facts all sit inside the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 tables.

That is exactly what the wheel's “6, 7, 8, 9 and 12” quick set holds, so one press aims every question at the facts that are left. The highlighted block in the chart in the next section shows them.

In the US, the Common Core math standards (standard 3.OA.C.7) expect students to know all products of two one-digit numbers from memory by the end of grade 3.

Facts still to learn up to 12 × 12, counting each turnaround pair once. Worked out from the grid itself.

Pressing Skip to next question before answering moves on without scoring the skipped fact.

Marking

Check answers, reveal them and keep score

Type an answer and press Check to mark it automatically, or press Show answer and choose Got it right or Got it wrong. The second way suits a class answering out loud.

  • Check

Accepts whole numbers and the Enter key. The panel says “Right!” or “Not quite.” and repeats your number.

  • Show answer

Reveals the product first, so a teacher or the student marks the result.

  • Score

Counts Right and Wrong with the percent correct. Reset score clears it, with an Undo.

  • History

Every marked answer goes into the Results tab with the time, such as “7 × 8 = 56 (right)”.

Beat the clock

Add a time limit per question

Time per question gives each fact 5, 10, 15 or 30 seconds, and a fact still unanswered when time runs out counts as wrong. A bar shrinks as the seconds pass, and the answer appears when time is up.

Longest a round of the 36-fact starting wheel can take, before spin time

  • 3:00At 5 s a fact36 facts × 5 seconds
  • 6:00At 10 s a fact36 facts × 10 seconds
  • 9:00At 15 s a fact36 facts × 15 seconds
  • 18:00At 30 s a fact36 facts × 30 seconds

Start with No limit while a table is new, then shorten the time as recall gets faster. A timed miss joins the missed facts list, the same as a wrong answer.

Weak spots

Missed facts and rounds on the multiplication wheel

Every fact answered wrong or out of time joins the missed facts list, most missed first. A fact missed twice shows ×2 beside it.

Press Practice missed facts to swap the wheel for those facts only, so the next questions focus on the weak spots. Undo brings back the full wheel, and pressing a table rebuilds it from your tables. Clear missed list empties the list, with an Undo.

With Ask each fact once per round on, a marked fact sits out until every fact on the wheel has been asked. The panel counts progress, such as “12 of 36 asked this round”.

When the last fact is marked, every fact returns and a new round starts. Start the round again brings them back early. Each question is drawn by your browser's secure random generator, so every fact left has the same chance; the wheel fairness test shows the method.

A short daily routine for the times tables

  • Warm up on known facts. One quick round of the 2, 5 and 10 quick set.
  • Add one new table. Press it on, keep Ask each fact once per round ticked, and go through every fact.
  • Practice the misses. Press Practice missed facts and repeat until the list is empty.
  • Finish with a timed round. Pick 10 seconds and try to beat yesterday's percent correct.

FAQ

Times tables wheel FAQ

Is the times tables wheel free?

Yes. Every table, the timer and the score are free, with no account or sign-up.

Can I practice just one times table?

Yes. Press the other tables to switch them off, so only one stays on. The wheel then holds 10 or 12 facts.

Does it go up to 12 × 12?

Yes. Choose Multiply by 1 to 12. All 12 tables then make 144 facts.

Can students type their answers?

Yes. Type a whole number and press Check or Enter. The panel marks it right or wrong.

Does the wheel include division?

No. The wheel asks multiplication facts only. Typed entries such as 6 × 13 also work.

Is the score saved?

Yes, in this browser only. The score and missed facts stay until you reset them or clear the site’s data.

Will the same question come up twice in a row?

Not with Ask each fact once per round on. A marked fact sits out until the round ends. With it off, any fact can come up on any spin.

Can I use the times tables wheel on a projector?

Yes. Press Full screen. The wheel fills the screen, and the question card sits in a corner once a question is showing.
