Four divisions of eight

The NHL wheel: two conferences, four big divisions

The NHL has 32 teams in 2 conferences, and each conference has 2 divisions of 8. No other league on this site packs more than 5 teams into a division.

Full wheel: the four divisions
  • 1 in 32All 32 on3.125% for each team
  • 1 in 16East or West only6.25% per team in that conference
  • 1 in 8Single division12.5%, from 8 teams

Each spin is settled by your browser's crypto random generator before the wheel moves, so spin length and the Stop button can't tilt it. Only weights set in the Entries tab change the odds, and they never touch the pool deal. The wheel's fairness test charts 10,000 spins of any list.

How to pick with the random NHL team generator

The default wheel holds every club, so the quickest pick is a single tap. The steps add the filters when you need them.

  1. Filter

Keep the whole league, or tap a conference or a division to take its teams off. For the Pacific only, tap No teams, then Pacific.

  2. Name style

Choose Full names, such as Toronto Maple Leafs, or Nicknames, such as Maple Leafs.

  3. Spin

Use the Spin button, a click on the wheel or Space. The result card adds a line such as “Metropolitan Division · Eastern Conference”.

  4. Drop a rival

Untick a team under Pick teams one by one, or press Remove in the popup to keep it out of later spins.

If a button's edge turns dashed, only some of its teams are in. The All 32 teams chip brings everyone back, and lines you typed yourself stay where they are.

Need several teams at once?

Choose Several, no repeats, enter how many and press Pick. Each picked team leaves the wheel until the draw ends, then returns. The list shows every team with its division in draw order. Quick spins shorten each turn to 1 second, and Copy list and the Results tab keep a record.

Custom sets

Canadian teams and the Original Six

Seven of the 32 NHL teams are based in Canada: Montréal Canadiens, Ottawa Senators, Toronto Maple Leafs, Winnipeg Jets, Calgary Flames, Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks. The other 25 play in the United States.

To spin the Canadian clubs alone on the random NHL team generator, tap No teams, open Pick teams one by one and tick those 7. Each then has a 1 in 7 chance, or 14.286%.

The Original Six were the whole league for 25 seasons, from 1942-43 to 1966-67, according to NHL.com's league history. The league doubled in 1967-68, and Chicago's club was spelled Black Hawks back then. Tick these six for a throwback wheel; 2 of them are Canadian.

Bracket

Playoff bracket picks with a random NHL team

16 teams make the Stanley Cup Playoffs: the top 3 in each division plus 2 wild cards per conference. Every round is best of 7, per NHL.com's playoff format.

  • 15Series to call16 teams down to 1 champion
  • 1 in 32,768Perfect spun bracket2 × 2 × … 15 times over
  • 50%Spun team makes it16 of the 32 teams reach the playoffs
  • Series by series

Tap No teams, tick the two teams in a series and spin. Repeat for all 15 and you have a full bracket nobody argued over.

  • Deal the field

Untick the 16 teams that missed out and deal the rest in Office pool. Four friends get 4 teams each.

  • One champion pick

Spin the 16-team wheel once for your Cup winner. Each team carries a 1 in 16 chance on the wheel.

The 32,768 figure holds whatever the real favorites are, because every spun pick is a fair 50/50 between two teams. The real champion needs 16 wins, four in each of 4 rounds.

Hockey pool

Deal the whole league in a hockey pool

Office pool mode deals every team on the wheel to the people you list, one team at a time after a random shuffle. Every hand is the same size, give or take one team.

Left-over teams go to random people with Deal them too, or stay out with Set them aside. Copy and Download CSV share the hands with the group, and the last deal stays saved in this browser.

Pool rules that head off arguments

  • Deal before opening night. Nobody can say the deal was steered after a week of results.
  • Settle the spare teams first. With 5 people, 2 teams are spare; agree whether they get dealt or sit out before anyone presses Deal.
  • Keep the CSV. It lists person, team, conference and division, so adding a points column each week takes a minute.
  • Re-deal only by agreement. Deal again replaces the saved hands in this browser, so copy the old ones first.

New on the wheel

Utah, Seattle, Vegas: the newest NHL teams

The newest name on the wheel is the Utah Mammoth, in the Central Division of the Western Conference. The NHL set up the Utah franchise on April 18, 2024, and it played its first season as the Utah Hockey Club.

The Mammoth name was revealed in May 2025 after fan surveys, per NHL.com. Before Utah came two expansion clubs: the Vegas Golden Knights, who began play in 2017-18, and the Seattle Kraken.

Seattle's first NHL game was on October 12, 2021, away at Vegas (NHL.com schedule story). All three sit in the West, so spinning the Western Conference alone gives a newer-team night.

More ways to play

Fantasy hockey, franchise mode and game night

The random NHL team generator settles the small questions of a hockey season with a pick nobody can argue with.

  • Fantasy draft order

Wipe the teams with No teams, list the managers in Entries, then let Several, no repeats put them in order. That order is your draft.

  • Franchise mode

Hockey video games with a franchise mode begin with a team choice. Spin it and stick with that club for the save.

  • Tonight’s game

On a busy night, untick every club that isn’t playing and spin what remains to choose the game.

  • Hockey trivia

Spin, then ask for the team’s division, arena or captain. The division cards make a quick answer key.

For a pick’em round, spin a team for each player and have them call its next result. Four NHL nicknames (Panthers, Rangers, Jets and Kings) also belong to football or baseball clubs, yet “Jets” typed here always means Winnipeg. Baseball fans can spin the random MLB team generator, football fans the NFL spin the wheel page, and the random country wheel adds a geography round.
