Rules

How to play spin the bottle

Players sit in a circle, one person spins a bottle in the middle, and whoever it points at takes the next turn. The classic party version ends in a kiss. This one keeps every turn clean.

  1. Seat the players

Type one name per line in Players, from 2 to 20; the circle starts with 6 sample names, Maya to Noah. Seats run clockwise from the top.

  2. Pick a mode

Pick a player, Truth or dare, Compliments or Questions, then choose who spins first. Their name gets a blue outline.

  3. Spin the bottle

Press Spin, click the bottle or press Space. Stop brakes early, and braking never changes who is picked.

  4. Take the turn

Read the result under the circle. The Who spins next rule hands the bottle on, so the game keeps moving.

Playing with a real bottle

  • Use an empty plastic bottle. Laid on its side on a smooth floor or table, it spins longer and won't break.
  • Space the circle evenly. A gap between 2 players makes the people beside it easier to land on.
  • Agree on a re-spin rule. If the bottle stops between 2 people, or on the spinner, spin again.
  • No bottle handy? A phone or laptop in the middle of the circle, or a shared screen on a video call, works instead.

Ideas

Spin the bottle ideas for a clean game

Pair each spin with a truth, a dare, a compliment or a question. These come straight from the game's own lists, shown here for a turn where Leo spins and the bottle lands on Maya.

  • Truths

    • What is the weirdest dream you can remember?
    • What food do you pretend to like?
    • What is something most people here do not know about you?
    • What habit would you like to stop?
  • Dares

    • Speak in rhymes until your next turn.
    • Pretend to be a waiter and take everyone's order.
    • Narrate the next player's turn like a nature documentary.
    • Do your best robot dance for 20 seconds.
  • Compliments

    • Leo, tell Maya what job you would hire them for, and why.
    • Leo, give Maya a made-up award, such as Best Snack Sharer.
    • Leo, tell Maya what you would want them on your team for.
    • Leo, tell Maya which superpower suits them, and why.
  • Questions

    • Maya, which fictional world would you move to for a year?
    • Maya, what song would play when you walk into a room?
    • Maya, what invention do you wish existed?
    • Maya, what job would you try for just one day?

Truths and dares are drawn from the Family set at mild and medium levels. For a longer game with more intensity levels, the truth or dare wheel holds the full bank.

Modes

Four modes for the bottle spinner

The mode decides what happens after the bottle stops, and none of them involve kissing or dating. Every prompt list deals each card once before any comes back.

  • Pick a player

The bottle names who goes next and adds nothing else. Use it for board games or any turn order.

    No prompts

  • Truth or dare

The chosen player taps Truth or Dare and gets a prompt from the site’s own bank, mild and medium only.

  • Compliments

The spinner gives the chosen player a compliment, guided by a prompt with both names filled in.

    20 prompts

  • Questions

The chosen player answers a get-to-know question. New question draws another without a spin.

Turns

Spin the bottle rules: who spins next

Two settings shape a game: who spins next, and whether the spinner can be picked. With Skip the spinner on, the bottle never points back at the person who spun it.

Turn settings and what they do
Setting and optionWhat it does
Who spins next: the chosen playerThe classic rule: whoever the bottle points at spins next.
Who spins next: next around the circleThe turn to spin passes clockwise, seat by seat, so everyone spins equally often.
Who spins next: same spinnerOne host spins every time, which suits a teacher or a party leader.
Skip the spinnerOn by default. Turn it off and the spinner can land on themselves.

How many spins until everyone has had a turn?

Average spins until the bottle has pointed at every player at least once, with Skip the spinner on. With 6 players and the classic rule it takes about 12.4 spins.

Average spins until every player has been picked, by rule
PlayersThe chosen playerNext around the circleSame spinner
4 players6.58.05.5
6 players12.414.511.4
8 players19.221.618.2
10 players26.529.125.5
12 players34.237.133.2

Worked out exactly. Same spinner counts everyone except the host, who is never picked. The circle rule runs longest because a player still waiting for a turn can't be picked while they hold the bottle.

Fair turns

Chance of being picked on each spin

Every eligible player has the same chance on every spin: 1 in (players − 1) with Skip the spinner on, or 1 in (players) with it off.

Chance that one particular player is picked on a spin
PlayersSkip the spinner onSkip the spinner off
3 players1 in 2 = 50%1 in 3 = 33.3%
4 players1 in 3 = 33.3%1 in 4 = 25%
6 players1 in 5 = 20%1 in 6 = 16.7%
8 players1 in 7 = 14.3%1 in 8 = 12.5%
10 players1 in 9 = 11.1%1 in 10 = 10%
12 players1 in 11 = 9.1%1 in 12 = 8.3%
16 players1 in 15 = 6.7%1 in 16 = 6.3%
20 players1 in 19 = 5.3%1 in 20 = 5%

The chosen player is drawn by crypto.getRandomValues before the bottle turns, and the spin then steers it there; the randomness explainer shows how. The bottle always stops well inside a seat, never within 12% of the line between 2 players.

The Times picked tally counts every result. Short runs where one player comes up 2 or 3 times are normal, because each spin starts fresh.

Beyond truth or dare

More games to play with the bottle

Pick a player mode turns the bottle into a turn-taker for any game where one person goes at a time.

  • Story circle

The chosen player adds 1 sentence to a group story, then spins for the next storyteller.

  • Charades

The chosen player acts out a movie, an animal or a job while everyone else guesses.

  • Hum that tune

The chosen player hums a song until someone names it, then spins for the next singer.

  • Chores and jobs

Spin once per job to decide who clears the table, picks the music or hands out snacks.

Want a ready question for the chosen player? Pull one from the would you rather questions. For a long class list or a no-repeat draw, the random name picker removes each name once it is chosen.

House rules

House rules that keep spin the bottle kind

Settle these out loud before anyone touches the bottle, and nobody leaves the circle unhappy.

Rules worth saying out loud

  • Anyone can pass. A player who passes spins again or hands the turn on, with no penalty.
  • Dares stay in the room. No leaving the house, no contacting people outside the group, and nothing that could break.
  • Kind words only. Compliments and answers are never used to tease.
  • Grown-ups choose the audience. For a younger group, an adult picks the Kids or Family prompts.
  • Phones stay down. No photos or videos of a dare unless the player says yes.
  • Cap the long dares. If a dare lasts until your next turn and the bottle never comes back, end it after 5 minutes.

Names stay on your device

The player list and the tally are saved in this browser so the circle is ready next time. They are never uploaded.

FAQ

Spin the bottle FAQ

What is spin the bottle?

A party game where players sit in a circle and a spun bottle chooses who takes the next turn. This version adds a truth or dare, a compliment or a question instead of a kiss.

Is spin the bottle online free?

Yes. Every mode is free to play, and there is no account to create.

How many people can play?

From 2 to 20 players. With more than 10 players, names sit on 2 rings so they stay readable.

Can the bottle point at the person who spun it?

Not unless you turn off Skip the spinner. With it off, every player, the spinner included, has the same chance.

What if the bottle lands between 2 people?

Online, it can’t. The bottle always stops well inside one seat. With a real bottle, agree before you start that a line means a re-spin.

Can we play spin the bottle on a video call?

Yes. One person opens the page and shares their screen. Seat the names in the order of the call grid so the circle feels right.

Does this version include kissing?

No. The 4 modes are pick a player, truth or dare, compliments and questions, written to suit teens and families.

Do truth or dare prompts repeat?

Not until the list runs out. Each list deals every prompt once before shuffling again.
